Three Dead in Bus Crash in Siberia

Three people were killed and 21 people injured after a bus overturned in western Siberia early Monday morning, a news report said.

At least two men and one woman were killed in the accident, which took place at about 2:15 a.m. local time near the border of the Tyumen region and the Khanty-Mansiisk autonomous district, Interfax cited regional traffic police as saying.

A further 21 people suffered injuries in the crash, and nine seriously injured passengers were airlifted to a nearby hospital. Twenty-four people were traveling on the bus at the time of the crash, the report said.

The driver is believed to have moved into the opposite lane to avoid a pothole in the road, but his vehicle skidded on the ice and ended up overturning in a ditch, Interfax cited regional traffic police as saying.

The bus is owned by a private company, the report said.
