Worker Dead After Staircase Crumbles in Nizhny Novgorod Building

A stairwell of a high-rise building under construction in the central Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod has collapsed, killing a worker, the state-run TASS news agency reported Monday.

“In one of the sections of the building, flights of stairs have completely crumbled from the 22nd floor to the first floor,” Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Petrova was quoted as saying.

Rescuers retrieved the body of a 30-year-old construction worker who was crushed by a falling cement block, the Vremya N news portal reported.
