133 years ago today, on Jan. 23, 1881, Pyotr Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin" premiered at the Bolshoi Theater. The lyrical opera based on Alexander Pushkin's novel was first staged at the Maly Theater in 1879 to a lukewarm reception, but its popularity took off after its debut in the larger Bolshoi two years later.
