Today in History, Dec. 26

The Decembrist revolt as painted by Vasily Timm in 1853.

188 years ago today, on Dec. 26, 1825, more than 3,000 protesters gathered in St. Petersburg's Senate Square to revolt against Tsar Nicholas I's rise to the throne and serfdom. The protest became known as the Decembrist revolt and, although it was unsuccessful, many historians consider this event as a pivotal moment for the revolutionary movement in Russia.
