Bastrykin Probes Brutal Beating of 3 Orphans in Khabarovsk

Russia's top investigator, Alexander Bastrykin, has been tasked with investigating the savage beating of three small children in a Khabarovsk region orphanage.

The two nurses suspected of committing the sickening acts of torture on April 1 have yet to be caught by police. Bastrykin has called for their arrest.

According to a statement on the Investigative Committee's website, the nurses were drinking heavily when several children woke up and started to cry. They beat a three-year-old boy and a 10-month-old girl, causing soft tissue injuries and bruising.

A seven-month-old boy had his head wrapped in a blanket and was put in a plastic container by the suspects, who then continued with their drinking binge.

Orphanage staff found the children the next morning and took them to hospital. However, the incident wasn't actually reported by the orphanage until April 8.

The youngest victim has been taken out of a coma and is recovering, state-run TV channel Channel 1 reported.
