Zankishiyev, who went by the nickname "Ubaida,"| was called by the committee one of the "odious leaders of the underground operating in the North Caucasus."
The operation took place in a home in Nalchik, the republic's capital, early Tuesday morning. After Zankishiyev refused to surrender, security forces stormed the building.
The anti-terror committee said Zankishiyev has led the terrorist underground in Kabardino-Balkaria since last year, over a period during which more than 30 terror attacks have taken place in the republic, including murders of security service members and soldiers.
