Kyrgyz Gold Miners Strike

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan — The operator of the largest gold mine in Kyrgyzstan says workers have gone on strike in a demand for payments to a state social fund.

Centerra Gold says the strike at the Kumtor mine is illegal. The company produced 585,000 ounces of gold there last year.

The mine accounts for roughly one-tenth of Kyrgyzstan's economy and has been at the center of several industrial and environmental disputes.
