BELGRADE — Serbia's last major war crimes suspect was able to evade capture thanks to a network of hard-liners and may have spent time in Russia, investigators said.
Serbian security officials arrested Goran Hadzic, a Croatian Serb wartime leader indicted for crimes against humanity during the 1991-95 Croatian war, on Wednesday on a forest road about 65 kilometers north of Belgrade.
Officials believe that Hadzic spent at least part of his time on the run in Russia and investigated electronic payments linked to him, a state security official said on condition of anonymity.
Hadzic could be transferred to the war crimes tribunal in The Hague on Friday afternoon, his lawyer said.
