Student Beaten to Death

A 20-year-old student of the Moscow-based Russian State Medical University was beaten to death and three of his friends were briefly hospitalized after a brawl with unidentified men, a law enforcement source told RIA-Novosti on Wednesday.

The incident took place on the premises of the Peoples’ Friendship University in southwestern Moscow on Saturday, but was only reported Wednesday, the source said, adding that the victim, Mikhail Antonchik, died of head injuries in the hospital.

Komsomolskaya Pravda and Rusnovosti.ru said the attackers looked like Caucasus natives but gave conflicting accounts on their number and on what had prompted the brawl. A case was opened on charges of battery and voluntarily infliction of bodily harm that resulted in death, punishable with up to 12 years in prison.
