7 Policemen Slain

A series of violent clashes on the streets of Dagestan’s capital, Makhachkala, on Thursday killed seven police officers and four rebels, and injured five others, Interfax reported.

The militants pelted police cars with bullets in two separate incidents and tried to get away in their own car but were blocked by law enforcement officers. The insurgents’ car blew up during the shootout, apparently after something set off a bomb it was carrying, the report said. Two of those injured were police officers; the other three were civilians.
