Putin Welcomes 'Gulag Archipelago' Printing

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has welcomed the publication of a school version of Soviet-era dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s “The Gulag Archipelago,” calling it essential reading.

“This book is much-needed,” Putin told Solzhenitsyn’s widow, Natalya, in televised remarks late Tuesday.

Natalya has created an abridged version for high school students that is a quarter the length of the multi-tome original.
