The Investigative Committee has cleared prison doctors in the death of Hermitage Capital lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who died in pretrial detention after months of worsening health problems, Interfax reported Thursday.
But the committee will now examine whether the investigators who kept Magnitsky in detention were aware that his condition required that he be moved to a civilian hospital, a committee spokesman told Interfax.
He did not elaborate on how the investigators would obtain information on Magnitsky’s health if not from prison doctors.
Human rights champion Lev Ponomaryov slammed the committee’s decision, calling it “political not professional.”
