Cop Killed, Mufti Wounded

MAKHACHKALA — A police officer was killed and an Islamic cleric was wounded Tuesday in separate attacks in the North Caucasus, the Interior Ministry said.

Magomed Deniyev, a spokesman for the ministry’s branch in Chechnya, said the police officer was killed in a clash with a group of militants in the southern Shatoi district. Another policeman was wounded in the shootout.

A local Islamic cleric was gravely wounded in Ingushetia when a remotely controlled explosive device hit his vehicle Tuesday.
