LONDON -- Manchester United, England's most storied soccer team and playing with just-returned striker Eric Cantona, was eliminated in the second round of the League Cup by lowly second-division side York City.
Manchester United won Tuesday's match 3-1 on two goals by Paul Scholes before 9,500 fans at York but was eliminated 4-3 on aggregate after a shocking 3-0 loss two weeks ago at Old Trafford stadium in Manchester in the first-leg match.
The team's exit -- the biggest upset in the League Cup's 36-year history -- came in Cantona's second match after an eight-month suspension.
Cantona, banned after attacking a fan in a match in January, played his first match Sunday and scored on a penalty in a 2-2 draw with archrival Liverpool.
The 29-year-old Frenchman was hardly a factor in Tuesday's match, perhaps suffering from fitness problems after such a long layoff.
The embarrassing exit from a cup competition was the second in just a few days for Manchester United. The first came last week when Russian side Rotor Volgograd dumped them from the UEFA Cup in the first round. Scholes gave Manchester United a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, capitalizing on a York City defensive error and 19-year-old York goalie Andy Warrington, who was making his debut as a starter.
Terry Cooke made it 2-0 in the 13th minute, and Manchester United seemed in control and pressing for more, until York City's Scott Jordan cut the lead to 2-1 in the 38th minute.
Scholes scored his second in the 80th minute in an evenly played second half to give United the 3-1 win.
Manchester United turned up the heat in the final 10 minutes with United goalie Peter Schmeichel wandering wide from the goal to press for the offensive advantage.
Wimbledon was the only other Premier League team to be eliminated after a 3-3 draw in extra time at Charlton. Charlton advanced 8-7.
Other Premier League teams did better. Arsenal advanced 8-0 after a 5-0 win at home where Dennis Bergkamp scored twice and Ian Wright added a hat trick.
Leeds won 3-2 at Notts County, also advancing 3-2 on aggregate. Aston Villa drew 1-1 against Peterborough but advanced 7-1.
Queens Park Rangers advanced 3-2 after a 2-1 win at home.

In Bonn, second division Nuremberg dumped Bundesliga giants Werder Bremen out of the German Cup.
Bremen midfielder Mario Basler looked to have settled the third round tie early on by setting up a goal for Vladimir Beschastnikh and then looping in an inspired lob from 16 meters in the 20th minute to give the 1994 cup winners a 2-0 lead Tuesday.
But Nuremberg, already conqueror of Bundesliga side Hansa Rostock, got their just reward for concerted pressure shortly after halftime when Joe Max Moore scored from a free kick and then set up a goal for Markus Kurth 10 minutes later.
Oliver Straube scored the winner just one minute from time. ()
