Zhirinovsky Lectures Bankers

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, warned a gathering of Russian and foreign bankers Tuesday against profiteering, saying they "could become victims of the economic situation" if the population becomes resentful.

A few foreign bankers and about 40 Russian bankers accepted Zhirinovsky's invitation to the meeting, which was held in the Federation Council.

One foreign banker, who asked not be named, said he had refused to attend the meeting because he did not want to provide the controversial Zhirinovsky with credibility.

Zhirinovsky presented a "thesis" stating that a strong ruble is "the alpha and omega" of the LDP's economic policy.

The ruble has recently been sliding, following an apparent Central Bank policy to allow the currency to fall in tandem with inflation.

Zhirinovsky called on the bankers to "stop thinking only of your own profits" and to help ensure that "the government is strong," but did not provide any details on the LDP views foreign investment.

He said that capital flight from Russia is the biggest problem facing financial reform, and told bankers that "banks must not be channels for the leaking of Russian wealth."

He then asked them to give his party financial assistance.
