Yeltsin Takes Dig at EU

President Boris Yeltsin, at a Friday meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Karolos Papoulias, took a dig at the European Union by complaining Russia was still not seen as European in some quarters. "Russia occupies half of Europe, but until now it is not even considered as part of Europe," Itar-Tass news agency quoted the Russian leader as telling Papoulias. Yeltsin has complained that preparations for a partnership and cooperation agreement with the EU are taking too long. Itar-Tass said the Greek minister invited Yeltsin to a European Union summit in the Greek island of Corfu on June 24-25 and assured the Russian leader the agreement could be signed then. Greece is current president of the European Union. France had delayed the approval of the deal last month and had urged the EU to seek better controls over certain nuclear fuel imports from Russia, which is seeking better access to world markets. Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev said this week the agreement between Russia and the EU could be signed in Greece
