Yeltsin Enlists Finns

MOSCOW () -- President Boris Yeltsin said Friday he was seeking Finland's help in Russia's efforts to join the European Union, only hours after his foreign trade minister criticized the EU for not opening its markets.


"I hope Finland will make all efforts for Russia to be accepted into the European Union," Interfax quoted him as saying before meeting in the Kremlin with Finnish Prime Minister Esko Aho. Earlier Friday, Deputy Prime Minister


Oleg Davydov told reporters the European Union was using the conflict in Chechnya as a pretext to postpone ratification of an interim trade agreement with Russia initialed last month.
