Yakubovsky Aides Freed

MOSCOW () -- Police have freed a guard and a driver of the lawyer Dmitry Yakubovsky who were detained last month by St. Petersburg police on suspicion of theft, a spokesman for the city police said Thursday.

Alexander Nizyuk said police had freed the two men Tuesday without bringing charges.

"Yakubovsky, in his turn, was transported last Friday to another prison, Kresty," Nizyuk said, referring to a high-security jail in St. Petersburg.

Commersant Daily reported that the guard and driver had been detained in mid-December at an apartment in St. Petersburg where a stolen hoard of books and manuscripts was also found.

Yakubovsky was detained Dec. 20 and accused of involvement in the theft of a collection of ancient books.
