Williams Trade Key To Clippers' Victory

LOS ANGELES -- After trading Alabama forward Antonio McDyess, the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft, to the Denver Nuggets for center Brian Williams, forward Rodney Rogers and guard Brent Barry in a controversial draft-day deal, Clipper coach Bill Fitch insisted that Williams was the key to the trade.

Facing the Nuggets for the first time since the trade, Williams had a season-high 19 points, eight rebounds and a season-high five assists as the Clippers extended Denver's season-opening losing streak to six games with a 108-103 victory Sunday night.

But Williams said playing Denver did not provide extra incentive. "There's no lingering bitterness," he said.

The other players involved in the deal weren't as big a factor as Williams. McDyess, for example, had nine points and six rebounds in 30 minutes, but missed eight of 12 shots.

Knicks 120, Jazz 100. In New York, John Starks hit six 3-pointers on the way to scoring 26 points and Charles Oakley added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the New York Knicks.

Karl Malone led Utah with 29 points and 12 rebounds.

Spurs 84, Cavaliers 81. In Cleveland, David Robinson blocked seven shots and scored 18 points, including two free throws with 1.4 seconds left.

Suns 112, Golden State 109. In Phoenix, Charles Barkley had 31 points and 19 rebounds, but the Suns needed 3-pointers from Michael Finley, Wesley Person and Tony Smith in a 68-second span down the stretch to beat the Warriors.

Sixteen players were suspended Saturday for fighting during the Sacramento Kings' 119-95 win over the Pacers in Indiana on Friday night, the largest number ever suspended from one incident.

Dale Davis of Indiana and Michael Smith of Sacramento received the largest penalties: two-game suspensions and fines of $20,000. The pair fought with 2:43 left in the third quarter. Duane Causwell of the Kings was suspended for one game and fined $7,500.

The other 13 players penalized received one-game suspensions and $2,500 fines for leaving the bench areas.

NBA rules call for each team to dress at least eight players per game, so the suspensions are being served alphabetically. Causwell, Tyus Edney, Byron Houston, and Smith missed the Kings' game Saturday night at New Jersey, an 86-84 loss; the rest of the players will miss games this week.

Indiana already was missing coach Larry Brown, who was suspended by the NBA for one game and fined $10,000 for an outburst following his ejection from Thursday's game with the Knicks.

Hakeem Olajuwon became the 21st player in NBA to score 20,000 career points and only the ninth to also have at least 10,000 rebounds.

The 10-time All-Star center, a native of Nigeria, hit 20,001 points with 3:28 remaining in the first quarter. (LAT, AP)
