Warning for Burundi

ARUSHA, Tanzania () -- Burundi's interim leader warned Tuesday that his nation of Hutus and Tutsis would be plunged back into ethnic bloodshed unless rival political groups quickly resolved who would become the next president.

Sylvestre Ntibantunganya gave the warning at the start of regional talks in Tanzania to discuss ways of preventing a fresh bloodbath in Burundi where tension has been mounting since violence erupted in neighboring Rwanda.

In Burundi's capital Bujumbura, soldiers deployed on the streets in force in another attempt to quell 10 days of bloody unrest. Tutsi opposition leader Mathias Hitimana, whose arrest had sparked protests by Tutsis, was released.
