Vodka Cost May Triple

MOSCOW () -- An anticipated rise in the cost of grain will have a nasty side effect for Russian drinkers: The cost of vodka could triple by the end of the year.

Vladimir Yarmosh, who oversees Russian alcohol production, told Interfax on Thursday that the cost of a liter of vodka will soar from about 4,000 rubles ($2) to 14,000 rubles.

Another factor affecting the cost of vodka is a slump in overall alcohol production, Yarmosh said. In the past six months, Russia's alcohol factories have produced 500 million liters of vodka, 61 percent of the output during the same period last year.

Yarmosh blamed the drop on rising imports of foreign brands of alcohol from abroad, including former Soviet republics.
