Uzbeks Eye Partnership

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov said Monday his former Soviet republic planned to join NATO Partnership for Peace. As a Partnership for Peace member Uzbekistan would be eligible for joint training and exercises alongside troops from NATO countries. "Uzbekistan is going to sign this program and we are not doing this in order to attract the attention of superpowers. We are doing this in our own interest," Karimov told a news conference.
