EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, California -- U.S. companies are teaming up with a Russian aircraft maker to outfit a Tupolev supersonic transport plane to test high-speed technologies, according to the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
The Aerospace firms Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell International, General Electric and Pratt and Whitney have contracted with Tupolev to use a Tu-144 on 35 test flights beginning next summer, the agency said.
The aircraft will remain in Russia. Officials from NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards will travel there for the test program, said Dryden spokesman Don Haley. The Tu-144, can cruise at greater than twice the speed of sound, has a maximum range of 4,000 kilometers and a top altitude of 62,000 feet.
