Tula Miners Call Strike

MOSCOW () -- Trade union leaders at 16 coal mines in the Tula region of central Russia have called for an indefinite strike to force the government to pay back wages, a newspaper reported Friday.

The miners' decision followed the collapse of lengthy negotiations at the Nikulinskaya coal mine in Tula, where 160 miners have been on strike since Oct. 27, the daily Izvestia said.

The workers are demanding back pay of 900 million rubles ($290,000). Mine administrators said they have already been paid 60 percent of their salaries, but the miners say they have not received any pay.
