Top French Skier Quits

PARIS -- Carole Merle, France's top woman skier over the past several years, announced her retirement from competition, according to a statement from her manager. Merle, 30, won the latest season title in the World Cup super-G and giant slalom, but she had just one individual World Championship when she captured the giant slalom in Morioka, Japan in 1993. The announcement was made Thursday.
