Top Banker Quits

MOSCOW ) -- Valentin Pavlov, former Soviet prime minister, has quit from his position as president of Chasprombank, a bank official said Monday.


The resignation Aug. 31 comes in the wake of the liquidity crisis that shook the Moscow banking world two weeks ago. The weekly television program Itogi on Sunday quoted "a Central Bank source" as saying that about 100 commercial banks, including about 30 big banks, could not meet their payments in the crisis.
