Surgery for Fisherman

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, Russia () -- A Japanese fisherman accused of poaching in Russian waters underwent surgery Friday for wounds suffered when his ship was fired on Monday by Russian border forces.

Doctors on Sakhalin Island in Russia's Far East performed three hours of surgery to remove a fragment from the fisherman's back, Itar-Tass reported. Officials said his wounds were not life threatening.

He was identified by Russian border guards as Nagoshi Norikazu, 25. Previously, Japanese authorities had said the wounded man was the captain of the fishing boat, Koichi Ikeura, 31.
