Supreme Court Warns Judges Against Travel to U.S.-Friendly Countries

Head of the Supreme Court's judicial department Alexander Gusev. Vedomosti

A Supreme Court official has sent a memo to all Russian justices to warn them against traveling to any country this summer that has an extradition treaty with the U.S., a news report said.

The memo, signed by head of the Supreme Court's judicial department Alexander Gusev, has been sent out to all judges in the country, from Supreme Court justices to low-ranking magistrates, Kommersant reported Wednesday.

Citing a statement released by the Foreign Ministry in April, which warned Russians they could be arrested abroad under a supposed U.S. "hunt" in response to Moscow's annexation of Crimea, the memo said it was "necessary to bring this information to the attention of judges and state officials who intend to travel abroad during their vacations," Kommersant reported.

An unidentified official in Gusev's judiciary department said staff had been told about the warning, but it was only a "recommendation," not a ban on foreign trips, the report said.
