TOWN () -- A judge Wednesday rejected the death penalty and sentenced three men to 18 years in prison for the "cold-blooded and ruthless" murder of American student Amy Biehl.
High Court Judge Gerald Friedman said he rejected the prosecution's motion for the death penalty because it was not impossible that Biehl's killers could reform themselves and become useful citizens, "despite the fact that they have shown no remorse."
The three men were convicted Tuesday of the fatal beating and stabbing of Biehl on Aug. 25, 1993, when she tried to drive black friends to Guguletu township, outside Cape Town
