Street Cleaners Daunted By Heavy, Slushy Mess
There were 544 reported car accidents Tuesday, in which five people died and 42 others were wounded, GAI spokesman Andrei Shchavelev said.
On Monday, the city recorded 195 accidents while on Wednesday, Moscow logged 291 wrecks.
"When we have the first snow or frost we have the same situation, every year", said Shchavelev.
Shchavelev said city street cleaners are never prepared for the first blanketing of snow, no matter when it comes.
"Moscow City Council informed us that 844 street-cleaning cars were working Tuesday, but no one from our division saw these special patrols", Shchavelev said.
Traffic police said conditions were worse during the second half of the day, and that the city's two major arteries -- the ring roads -- were left in particularly bad condition.
