MONTREAL -- Darryl Strawberry hit his first homer in over a year, a grand slam, and drove in five runs to lead the San Francisco Giants over the Expos 8-1, their fifth straight win.


Strawberry's two-out homer off Pedro Martinez (6-5) in the fifth inning Thursday was his first since June 8, 1993, for Los Angeles.


The grand slam, over the right-field fence, was the sixth of Strawberry's career and the first since Aug. 21, 1991, when he was a member of the New York Mets.


Bud Black (3-0) worked six innings as the Giants won their season-high fifth straight since Strawberry joined them last Thursday.


Black, making his fifth start after off-season elbow and knee surgery, allowed three runs on five hits, struck out one and hit two batters.


Strawberry, who had managed just an infield single in 11 at-bats, also had an RBI single in the first and a leadoff double in the eighth.


Pirates 8, Astros 2. Houston pitchers threw two run-scoring wild pitches and the Astros' usually reliable defense broke down in a five-run fifth inning as the Pirates won 8-2 in Pittsburgh.


Jon Lieber (5-4) bounced back after a pair of rough starts against Cincinnati to pitch his first major-league complete game, strike out a career-high eight and walk nobody.


Marlins 5, Braves 3. In Atlanta, the Florida Marlins scored four times in the first inning and held off the slumping Braves for their fourth consecutive victory. The Braves lost their second straight, fifth in seven games and 10th in 16 games.


Cubs 4, Reds 3. In Cincinnati, Mark Parent's two-run homer in the seventh put the Chicago Cubs ahead for good.


Rockies 8, Cardinals 1. At Denver, Andres Galarraga hit a two-run homer after a rain delay, helping the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals.


White Sox 6, Indians 3. Robin Ventura's RBI single capped a two-run rally in the seventh inning as Chicago moved back into first in the AL Central for the first time in a month, beating Cleveland in Chicago.


Royals 5, Tigers 2. At Kansas City, Missouri, Kevin Appier allowed two hits in the first inning and nothing else through eight as he continued his domination of the Tigers.


Rangers 7, Blue Jays 3. At Arlington, Texas, Dean Palmer doubled in a run and Manuel Lee brought in two with a double in a four-run second inning for the Rangers.


Brewers 6, Twins 4. At Minneapolis, Rookie pinch hitter Jeff Cirillo, batting just .107, hit a two-run double with one out in the ninth inning for the Brewers.


Red Sox 2, Athletics 1. At Oakland, California, Roger Clemens threw his 11th career two-hitter to lead the Red Sox.


Orioles 3, Angels 2. At Anaheim, California, Chris Sabo and Rafael Palmeiro hit back-to-back homers in the eighth inning off Mark Langston, and Ben McDonald pitched eight solid innings for the Orioles.


Yankees 13, Mariners 8. At Seattle, Paul O'Neill, Mike Stanley and Bernie Williams hit two-run doubles in a seven-run ninth inning as the Yankees rallied to hold on to first place in the AL East.
