Star's Future in Balance

MILAN, Italy-- The soccer career of Dutch star Marco van Basten was in question after a doctor said he needed another ankle operation and a long recovery. In the Netherlands, the center forward said Tuesday he would first consult with his team, Italian League champion AC Milan. "In this situation anything can be expected. There still is a possibility for a good ending," said van Basten, 29. But in a statement released in Milan, he admitted that "there is a possibility" his playing days are over. Dr. Marc Martens estimated van Basten would need at least six months of recuperation from the latest surgery. Van Basten needs another operation because cartilage damage has not properly healed, according to the Milan statement.
