Stanford Names Coach

STANFORD, California () -- Tyrone Willingham, a former Stanford assistant coach now with the NFL's Minnesota Vikings, was chosen to succeed Bill Walsh as the school's head coach.


Gary Migdol, Stanford's sports information director, confirmed Friday that Willingham had been hired and would be introduced later at a news conference.


Willingham, 40, a running back coach for the Vikings, is the fourth black head coach in NCAA Division I-A football. It is his first head coaching assignment.
