St. Petersburg Setting For Fast Food Chain

Subway Sandwiches and Salads, the U.S.-based international fast food chain, is opening its first store in St. Petersburg as part of an ambitious plan to operate 30 stores in Russia's second largest city within five years, a company official said Tuesday.

Subway, the second largest U.S. fast food chain after McDonald's, is set to launch its first venture on Nevsky Prospekt on Dec. 7, Stephen Brown, general director of Subway St. Petersburg, said.

Brown said Subway is planning to open another three to five stores in St. Petersburg next year and the number of locations is expected to grow to 30 within the next five years.

Subway's multi-layered meat and cheese "submarine" sandwiches, which are priced between $1.50 and $6 in the U.S, will be more expensive in Russia, but only slightly.

He said Subway St. Petersburg will initially use only imported ingredients in its sandwiches, but is hoping to eventually switch to Russian products.
