Sri Lanka Goes to Polls

COLOMBO -- SriLankans voted Tuesday in a hard-fought parliamentary election that could end the rule of the United National Party for the first time since 1977.

Analysts have predicted the opposition People's Alliance will win the vote, but PA campaigner Chandrika Kumaratunga said she feared the government might impose martial law after the elections rather than hand over power, a charge the ruling party has denied.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam guerrillas, who are fighting for an independent Tamil homeland in the north and east, vowed to disrupt voting.
