Spurs Best Sheffield, Man. Utd. Beats QPR

LONDON -- German World Cup star Juergen Klinsmann scored a goal in his Premier League debut, then was knocked unconscious and suffered a cut lip when he banged heads with another player in Tottenham's 4-3 opening day victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

Klinsmann, who became the English league's biggest post-World Cup signing coup when he was lured from Monaco in a ?2 million ($3 million) transfer deal, scored with a close-range header to give Spurs a 4-2 lead with eight minutes to play Saturday.

But shortly afterward, the striker collided with Des Walker and was given oxygen on the field before being taken off on a stretcher. Walker remained in the game.

"It's no problem. I'm fine," said Klinsmann, who punctured his top lip with his own teeth in the collision and required eight stitches.

The first day of the season was also marked by the sport's new red-card fever, as referees followed the World Cup trend by penalizing almost any aggressive tackle that did not find the ball.

Two players were sent off in two-time defending champion Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers, and Manchester City was also reduced to 10 men in a loss to Arsenal.

Despite winning its first game, Tottenham effectively remained three points adrift at the bottom of the standings, a result of the six-point penalty imposed during the offseason by the Football Association for financial irregularities.

Teddy Sheringham, Darren Anderton and Nicky Barmby also scored for Spurs, with teammate Colin Calderwood putting in an own goal for Wednesday. Romanian international Dan Petrescu was also on the scoresheet on his Wednesday debut, along with David Hirst. Rangers' Clive Wilson received the first red card of the season when he tripped United winger Andrei Kanchelskis, who had 35 yards of clear field in front of him. The booking came in the seventh minute, but the Reds didn't capitalize until the second half, when Mark Hughes and Brian McClair scored.

United substitute Paul Parker was sent off late in the game for pulling down Les Ferdinand as both teams finished with 10 men.

Elsewhere, Steve McManaman and Ian Rush both scored twice for Liverpool in a 6-1 rout at newly promoted Crystal Palace. Danish midfielder Jan Molby and Robbie Fowler also netted for the visitors, and Chris Armstrong scored a consolation goal for Palace.

Southampton produced the shock of the day when it held big-spending Blackburn to a 1-1 draw. Nicky Banger scored his first goal for two seasons for the Saints and goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelar, 36, saved an Alan Shearer penalty attempt. Shearer, who scored 34 goals last season, made up for it with a goal in the second half.

At Highbury, Manchester City had German strike Uwe Rosler sent off in a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal. Kevin Campbell, Alan Smith and Ian Wright scored the goals.

New Chelsea striker Paul Furlong, a ?2.3-million transfer from Watford, and Frank Sinclair both netted as the Blues beat Norwich 2-0.

Coventry salvaged a 1-1 draw at home against Wimbledon, with David Busst equalizing after Stewart Castledeine scored for the visitors.

Ex-Wimbledon striker John Fashanu celebrated his debut with Aston Villa with a goal in a 2-2 draw at Everton. Dean Saunders also scored for Villa, with Graham Stuart and Paul Rideout netting for Everton.

Dutch World Cup star Brian Roy marked his league debut with the only goal in Nottingham Forest's 1-0 victory at Ipswich, and West Ham and Leeds played to a scoreless draw.

In Scotland's Premier Division, six-time defending champion Rangers became the only team with two victories in two games after a 2-0 victory at Partick. Mark Hateley and Partick's David Byrne, who netted an own goal, accounted for the scoring.
