Speed Up Reform, IMF Tells Uzbekistan

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan -- International Monetary Fund managing director Michel Camdessus has urged Uzbekistan to speed up reform and fight inflation.

"Inflation must be overcome and a lot of reforms remain to be accelerated and deepened," Camdessus told a news conference Wednesday, also attended by Uzbek President Islam Karimov, who held talks earlier with Camdessus.

Last January the republic agreed with the IMF an economic stabilization program which unlocked a $74 million Systemic Transformation Facility loan.

Camdessus did not specify the exact steps he expected. He praised Uzbekistan for the "very significant steps taken toward stabilization" and moves toward lifting state control over prices and encouraging privatization.
