South Africa Rallies for Record Win

CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- South Africa claimed a historic victory when it beat New Zealand by seven wickets to win the third and final test and the series.

The hosts Friday became only the second team in test history to win a three-match series after losing the opening game. The only previous time was in 1988, when the great England player W.G. Grace led his side to a 2-1 win over Australia.

South African captain Hansi Cronje fittingly struck the winning boundary off left-arm spinner Matthew Hart after the team had been set a victory target of only 88.

Both openers Gary Kirsten and Rudolf Steyn were dismissed with the total on 37 and Daryll Cullinan departed after a brisk 28 from just 24 deliveries.

But Cronje and John Commins ensured there were no more bowling successes as they hit off the winning runs to a rapturous reception from the crowd of 15,000.

Mark Taylor, the Australian captain, and team manager Ian McDonald angrily denied Sunday that leg-spinner Shane Warne is struggling with an injured right shoulder.

A newspaper report claimed that Warne, who has taken 155 wickets in 32 tests, has had painkilling and cortisone injections in his shoulder during the current Ashes series against England.
