Setback for Blair

n BLACKPOOL, England (x) -- Leftist members of Britain's Labour Party inflicted an embarrassing defeat on leader Tony Blair on Thursday when its annual conference backed the principle of widespread nationalization.

A resolution, narrowly carried by 50.9 percent to 49.1 percent, expressed concern that Blair's strategy placed little emphasis on achieving the objectives of Clause Four of the party's 1918 constitution. The move follows Blair's ground-breaking speech at the conference Tuesday in which he promised to draw up a modern statement of aims to replace the clause's commitment to nationalization.

The vote represented the first substantial setback for Blair since he won the leadership in July pledging to drop Labour's traditional socialist baggage, which he believes have kept it out of power for 15 years.
