Russia's Human Rights Ombudswoman Calls for Investigation Into Kashin Attack

Russia's human rights ombudswoman has asked the Investigative Committee to look into the allegations of the Pskov regional governor’s involvement in a near-deadly attack against prominent journalist Oleg Kashin.

In an official appeal to Investigative Committee chief Alexander Bastrykin, ombudswoman Ella Pamfilova asked for a “thorough check-up” that would “confirm or dismiss” accusations, published in Russian media, linking Pskov Governor Andrei Turchak to the attack, her office said in a statement Thursday.

Pamfilova's request came on the heels of an interview published by Kommersant daily, in which one of the witnesses in the case accused the Pskov governor of involvement in the attack in November 2010.
