Russian Sailors Abandon Ship

MULGRAVE, Nova Scotia -- Half the crew of a Russian fishing trawler left the vessel docked in Nova Scotia on Wednesday in a dispute over ship safety and back pay.

The safety issues involved lifeboats, firefighting equipment and water for the crew, said John Langley, the Mulgrave port manager for Canada's Transport Ministry.

He also said the crew had not been paid for three months.

The vessel arrived Tuesday, unloaded its cargo and was about to leave when disgruntled crew members gathered on the dock with their suitcases.
