Russian Grabs Gold

SHEFFIELD, England () -- Dmitry Svatkovsky of Russia swept by his startled rivals in the final cross-country run to snatch the men's title in the modern pentathlon world championships. It was the first medal for the 23-year-old from Moscow.

He relegated Christophe Ruer of France to the silver medal, with Hungary's Janos Martinek, the 1988 Olympic champion, taking the bronze. Defending champion Richard Phelps of Britain finished outside the top 20 after bad shooting and fencing.
