Russian Footballer Proposes to Girlfriend on Pitch (Video)

A premier league football player stole the limelight after proposing to his basketball-playing girlfriend at a recent match, making them the latest celebrity couple in the world of Russian sport.

Ivan Novoseltsev, who plays as a defender for FC Rostov, made the proposal to basketballer Katerina Keyru after his side's match against Moscow's Torpedo FC on Monday.

Footage published on FC Rostov's official YouTube account shows Novoseltsev usher Keyru out onto the pitch and — as his teammates watch on — get down on one knee and ask her to marry him.

Judging from the passionate kiss that follows, Keyru appears to have agreed.

Speaking after the match, Keyru told reporters that she was surprised by the proposal but that it had lived up to all her expectations — not least because Rostov is her home town.

"I'm really happy because I really love Vanya [Novoseltsev]. He's an admirable, really admirable guy, and I think that everything will be great for us," she adds in the video.

"I tried to do something unforgettable," said Novoseltsev of his proposal.

Novoseltsev, 23, joined FC Rostov earlier this year from Torpedo Moscow and made his national team debut in last month's 0-0 friendly against Kazakhstan.

Keyru, 26, plays basketball for Moscow's Dynamo and earlier won gold with the Russian national side at the U-20 world championships in 2008. Her father arrived in the Soviet Union from Sierra Leone in the 1970s.
