SOFIA () -- Bulgaria and Russia have begun negotiations on setting up a joint gas company for the construction and operation of gas pipelines from Russia to the Balkans, a government statement said.

A Russian delegation, headed by Foreign Trade Minister Oleg Davydov, arrived Thursday on a two-day visit to Sofia and met Bulgaria's Prime Minister Lyuben Berov.

The statement said a joint venture agreement between Gazprom and Bulgarian firms could be signed during a visit later this year by Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomydrin.
