Russia Presses Debtors

Russia, which owes Western creditors over $80 billion, expects its own debtors to repay some $1.3 billion in 1996, according to figures presented in a document accompanying a draft 1996 budget.

The draft, which envisages a deficit of 3.9 percent of gross domestic product, was submitted to parliament last week.

The loans from Moscow, totalling almost $150 billion, were offered to developing countries and other "friendly states" during the Soviet era. Officials said earlier this year Russia could not expect to get more than $100 billion back.

The document said Russia expected to spend $8.5 billion in 1996 to service its debts to Western creditors.
