Russia Falls, Sadyrin May Resign

PONTIAC, Michigan -- Russian national team coach Pavel Sadyrin will resign following his squad's debacle at the World Cup, Russian team sources have said. "Sadyrin will hand his resignation when we return to Russia," a senior team official who demanded anonymity said Friday. "If he doesn't resign, the Russian federation is likely to replace him." Russia lost 3-1 to Sweden on Friday and virtually lost any chance of qualifying for the second round. Sadyrin has been Russia's head coach since June 1992. Sadyrin was not available for comment, and assistant coach Yury Semin said it was "up to the federation" to decide the matter. Russia faces Cameroon in its last group match Tuesday, but after a 2-0 loss in the first round against Brazil and no points so far, it needs a miracle to earn a second-round berth. In Friday's match, Swedish striker Martin Dahlin scored two goals against a makeshift Russian side reduced to 10 men for most of the second half. After a defeat to Brazil, Sadyrin dropped five players, including main striker Sergei Yuran. (AP, Reuters)
