Rugby Chief Stays On

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ) -- The president of South Africa's rugby union and organizer of the 1995 Rugby World Cup agreed to withdraw his resignation Monday after a plea from a government official.

Louis Luyt had said Sunday he would quit because of a dispute over the national team's management. But a late-night plea from the sports minister, Steve Tshwete, convinced him to remain, Luyt said Monday.

The dispute over team management followed South Africa's tour of New Zealand, during which prop forward Johan le Roux was caught on film biting the ear of the New Zealand captain, Sean Fitzpatrick.
