Rookie Cyclist Wins

CATANIA, Sicily () -- Rookie Karen Kurreck gave the United States their third gold medal of the world cycling championships when she won the new individual time trial over 29.6 kilometers on Thursday.

Kurreck, 32, won by 44 seconds with a time of 38 minutes and 22 seconds to beat Canadian Anne Samplonius with France's Jeanne Longo, the long acknowledged Queen of the Road, third, one minute and 21 seconds slower.

Only once during the ride was Kurreck, who only began competitive cycling three years ago from gymnastics and triathlons, challenged. That was when Canadian Clara Hughes was nine seconds faster over the first nine kilometers, only to fade to fourth fastest.
