RJR Buys Factory

MOSCOW () -- The U.S tobacco giant R.J. Reynolds Tobacco International Inc. announced Thursday that it had acquired a controlling share in a cigarette factory in Russia's Krasnodarsk region. The company did not disclose details of the agreement, the sixth major investment by RJR in the former Soviet Union since June 1992.


The factory at Armavir, 1,200 kilometers southeast of Moscow, produces 4 billion cigarettes a year.


The company -- which produces Camel, Winston, Magna, More and Salem brands of cigarette has also bought stakes in factories in Yelets, St. Petersburg, Kremenchug, Lvov in Ukraine and Chimkent in Kazakhstan.
