Rescuers Find Flood Survivors

Emergency workers in boats and helicopters rescued dozens of people who were found clinging to trees and stranded on rooftops days after a dam burst in the Ural Mountains, officials said Thursday.

So far, 16 bodies have been found.

The search continued for 18 other people still missing as a result of Sunday night's disaster on the Tirlyansk reservoir. Seven people remained hospitalized.

An army of 1,800 workers has rescued 37 people in the past 24 hours with the help of several helicopters and a number of boats, said Karl Smolikov, a spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry.

A 6-meter high wall of water swept over the town of Tirlyan and three nearby villages when the dam collapsed Sunday night after heavy rains.

About 750 people were evacuated from the Beloretsk region downriver.

Officials said that the flooding had destroyed approximately 80 houses and damaged an additional 220.

The dam is in Russia's Bashkiria republic, about 1,400 kilometers east of Moscow.
